Retail Market Opening critical path

Changing supplier

Under the current UK legislation, household customers are not able to switch their water supplier or sewerage service provider. The water or sewerage company that supplies your property will depend on where you live.

In 2002, the UK Government of the day said that it would not introduce competition for household customers. It felt that the cost and complexity of the regulation that would be required would outweigh any benefits.

In November 2015, the UK Government asked Ofwat to provide an assessment of the costs and benefits of extending retail competition in England to household customers.

Currently (2016) only developers or business customers who use more than 5 million litres of water a year (50 million litres in Wales) can choose their provider. However from April 2017, most non-household customers of suppliers based wholly or mainly in England will be able to choose both their water and wastewater retailer. They will not have to use a minimum amount of water. Customers will also be able to apply for a licence to supply themselves retail services.  If you are a business customer, find out more about choosing your supplier by asking Access Utilities.
